I don't understand why Microsoft insists on marching to a different drummer! If they would just follow the standards, like everyone else, life would be so much easier. I remember when Vista first came out. There where several routers from which Vista would not receive a DHCP address. The fix was to edit the registry to set that toggle flag! VERY FRUSTRATING! Microsoft, get a clue!!

On the title question, in the Course Library the video is called Types of Attacks (no part 1 or 2), and there's no other section called Types of Attacks. In the in-video subtitles it's called Types of Attacks Part 2, and reference is made to a previous part 1 video. I was just a little thrown off by the inconsistency, especially when the reference to the earlier episode discussing buffer overflows was mentioned, but it's a small thing.

The problem you run into is the possibility of discontiguous network addresses on routers. Routers can handle this if you're using routing protocols that support VLSM. For example, If I have Network A that is 172.16.10.0/24 on f0/0 and Network B 172.16.11.0/24 on Fa0/1.
By default, the Router will be able to do it but not of you have 172.16.10.0/24 on both interfaces. The router will send part of your packets to f0/0 and other parts to f0/1. So you will have packet loss.
Even NAT will not help here. NAT works off of setting your inside and outside interfaces. If you've got 172.16.10.0/24 on both inside interfaces and a single outside interface, it will NAT to both.

...Most newer switches have Auto MDI-X ports that detect whether MDI or MDI-X is needed and set the interface appropriately.

Rick (and Ronnie) are very good in their descriptions, however I would add an incident I experienced in the field. A switch would lose connectivity to an end device on one port. Power-cycling the switch cleared the issue for about a half-hour. It turns out that the cable was a crossover, and the switch would fail only on that "auto-flip" capability after that period of time. Replacing the cable (actually re-terminating it at one end) with the needed straight-through type solved it completely.

The other question was to find out what the largest contiguous ( or continuous) block was for the remaining hosts. I don't understand what that question means. Could anyone of you help explain what "largest contiguous block" is?

If you add up the hosts for the 4 subnets 35+ 67 + 12 + 30 = 144 hosts (out of 254 possible in a /24 network). The largest contiguous block that you could get here would [be a network] with a /25 (126 hosts)

I interpret the question as provided a Class C network (/24), what is the largest subnet after allocating the previously determined subnets (one of each: /25, /26/, /27, and /28). A /28 subnet (with 14 possible hosts) is the largest remaining block of the Class C, and completes the allocation of subnets for the entire /24 space. Of the results, the two /28 networks are adjacent to each other, that pair is adjacent to the /27 block, which as a group are adjacent to the /26 subnet, which as a group are half of the Class C network opposite the /25 subnet.

I was waiting for other ITProTV members to jump in with their wisdom and wit and provide some good experience and guidance for you before I jumped in...but since it was here overnight and no one did. Let me try to offer some help.

We're proud of our success stories with ITProTV. The most success that people have is the combination of using some study guide and to use ITProTV to help provide context or fill in gaps where they felt as if the book didn't cover enough. I can assure you that in our content we cover ever exam objective and subobjective without fail. So the combination of the two is a good combo. We cannot say that just watching videos is enough, but we can say along with your study methods and the ITProTV content your chances of success are really good.

The labs are a sandbox environment right now, They give you ability to test and try to make things work the way you believe they should work. We're working towards lab steps but we've not had time yet to develop them. So that's still in the future. So if you're just new to the field and say, I don't have the time or money to buy equipment and the OSes to try this stuff on it...we'll you have access now to the that environment.

Career-path certification goals should be based on a couple of factors. One is geography. If you live in a larger city where it jobs are highly specialized, you might want to target in a speciality for your career and direct effort towards that goal. If you're in a smaller community, where the "IT guy" is well THE "IT guy", you may instead pursue training and knowledge validation across multiple fields of study and become a better generalist.
The second factor is time and job oriented. If you're shooting for a targeted job or planning for the future. You need to keep that goal in front you at all times and plan out your pursuit of those things.
The best study tips is to try to do anything and everything to learn about what you're trying to do for a new career and make it a hobby. This will increase your desire to pursue, it will add to your knowledge. Try and see if some of these places will give you a tour and talk to guys that you're interested in what they do and what they did to achieve it. Keep your nose to study and learning.
Don't be afraid to get a small part time job or entry level job for the experience and try and see it as how to apply your learning.
Ask questions and post them here...ITProTV members are AWESOME. They'll help you fill in the gaps...they even point out when yours truly leads you astray in his content! ;) So it's a great community that you can get some good feedback from. I'm kinda shocked at how shy everyone has been. :)

It doesn't stop the signal cold but it does introduce additional problems. When the Fiber Optic cable is bent more acutely than the TIA standard ( min 2" bend radius) then light can be lost through the cladding as the cladding is stretched apart. Now saying that, if you of course bend it in half and break the cable you will stop the transmission cold.

I would go ahead and do the 800 series. The ITProTV covered every single exam objective. We have 90+ hrs of material on that series. I will say undoubtedly it is the most A+ content produced by training vendor out there. I can also tell you that other members have already used that content, along with their personal study methods to successfully earn the CompTIA A+ certification.

Though the 900s will probably do the same, it will do so slowly and currently because the exam is not yet out (Non-Disclosure Agreement). I'm not sure where that puts the broadcast of that since the CompTIA CASP series is scheduled for live broadcast. So even though we are beginning the recording of the new A+ it may not be broadcast live. So the content may not be available until the exam release date as well.

So by focusing in on the 800 series, you should be able to knock out A+ before the new series begins and start working on your Network+ and even Security+ as the 900 series goes live! :)

That's perfectly fine. I may not have been clear in the recording. In that episode, I believe I had an ftp server up and running already on a Windows Server. So, the IP address of that Windows server would have been the ip address for my FTP connection. My apologies for the ambiguity!

The trick for me for passing both the 801 & 802 was that I was already certified back in 2011. That certification expired, so I retook the 801 & 802 this June & early July. I used the Sybex Comptia A+ complete study guide for all of the 801 & 802 tests particularly the 801. I reviewed only some of the ITPro TV videos that weren't clear in the Sybex book (particularly for the 801: PC Components, Printers, & Laptops). Most of the topics for the 801 are in the Sybex book. I did the same for the 802. However, the Sybex book doesn't cover backups, permissions, or client-side virtualization, so I used the ITPro videos for that. I also used the ITPro videos for the Troubleshooting section, which goes more in depth than the Sybex book.

I suggest to folks that are new to this is to use all of the videos in ITPro TV and pick up a good A+ study guide (Mike Meyers, Sybex), read all of that, and take all of their practice exams. Also, buy a commercial practice test (one from Transcenders, Boson, PassITExam.com), take a 100 question practice exam, and score over 75%. Once you do that, you're good to go. You can also take the MeasureUp tests that come with ITPro TV.

If you're new to this, don't rush into this. I took this test back in 2011 and I took my time back then. I just needed to review ITPro because I believe it wasn't around back then and I just needed a refresher.

Sorry to take so long to reply, guys.

My approach:

First, I read Mike Meyer's A+ Exam Guide all the way through.

Next I subscribed to ITProTV, and purchased the Comptia CertMaster Bundle (voucher and study software: they give a free 2nd voucher if you don't pass the first time)

Starting with the 801 material:
For each exam objective, I first watched the ITPro episode(s), then worked through the corresponding CertMaster section. (If I needed further explanation, I went back to Meyer's book).
I basically followed this procedure twice through. Then, the last week prior to the exam, I worked through the practice tests (1 exam included with Meyer's Book, then the practice tests included with ITPro subscription). Once I reached 90 % mark with practice tests I scheduled the REAL EXAM, took and passed 801 in January

I followed this procedure again with the 802 exam, took that in May and passed.

I know this seems like a long time between exams, but I was completely new to IT studies, so I really had no experience before picking up Meyer's book.
I definitely needed the time to absorb all this new material (I have also been learning Python with some courses from Coursera and EdX).

Thanks again for the great shows (over 90 hours for the whole A+ is a mountain of material).

It depends on the library in question. If it is a library used by a kernel module, a reboot is necessary. If it is a library used by a service, restarting the service is usually efficient. However, there are certainly exceptions. Libraries that are called intermittently can be updated with any kind of restart or reboot. The next time a process calls the library it just magically receives the new library. That is the case with libraries like Java which can be updated on the fly.

Sorry I don't have a cut-and-dry answer for you, but it varies from library to library.

The simple rule of thumb is this on file and folder permission when moving/copying permissions.

Within the SAME partition (D:\original folder location to D:\new folder location) the permissions are kept and any permissions on new locations are inherited as well. So if, you had a file in the original that was read only and you copied it to new folder in the same partition that had Read and Execute, you would essential have read and execute regardless of moving or copying.

If you're moving or copying to a different partition (D:\original location to E:\new location), the permissions will be changed and you will drop your permission from the original and inherit the permissions of the destination folder location.

I've been wrong before, so check me on this by trying it out! :) Other members may chime in and give some background to this or tell me why I am wrong. I'm working from memory and now, my memory and eyesight may go hand in hand. ;)
