CompTIA Security+ (SY0-701) - Wait for new version or take old one?
-
Hello everyone!
I am currently studying for the Security+ exam right now but am at the point where I could easily pivot and wait for the SY0-701 version. I wanted to get others opinion on what I should do before I make my decision. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Hey @Paul-Duplessis, great question, and this is one we get a lot around: retirements and introductions to new objectives. Remember that if you pass 601 or 701 objectives, you are Security+ certified. Another thing to consider is how close you are to taking the exam. Is it a month or so before July 2024? If so, then you can still choose either option. How far are you in your studies? If you are starting, I advise using SY0-701 objectives, giving you the most time to prepare. However, stay the course if you have already been studying the SY0-601 objectives. The other Edutainers may chime in with recommendations as well. Please reach out to me if you have any questions during your training! Thank you for choosing ACI Learning.

Hello @wes-bryan ! I have been studying for the Security+ on and off for the last 3-4 months, so I probably should just take the SY0-601 then. I am currently going through all the labs and after finishing them, will start taking practice tests. I hope to take the actual test towards the end of November or early December. I am currently working as runtime support for a company using ServiceNow. What that ultimately means is I am the helpdesk for the ServiceNow platform. I am hoping to find some kind of job within Cybersecurity i.e. Security Analyst. Right now I have CompTIA A+ and Network+ (also took Google Cybersecurity Certificate for fun). What would be a good next step?

Sounds to me like your on a great track. Security+ will give you that coveted CompTIA trifect of the CompTIA Secure Infrastructure Specialist. After you ace Sec+ (and we all know you will!), maybe look at the CompTIA CySA+, Pentest+ or CASP+. Gaining all three certs - Security+, CySA+, Pentest+ and CASP+ will gain your their Secure Infrastructure Expert certification.
CySA+: https://www.comptia.org/certifications/cybersecurity-analyst
CASP+: https://www.comptia.org/certifications/comptia-advanced-security-practitioner
Pentest+: https://www.comptia.org/certifications/pentestYou could also move toward the Certified Ethical Hacker cert, which Daniel Lowrey masterfully teaches.
The CEH exam info can be found here: https://cert.eccouncil.org/certified-ethical-hacker.html
Good luck on your journey and keep us posted!

Hey @Paul-Duplessis I am truly sorry that this got by me and am now just responding. You have a great start, and I would recommend the CySA+ course for the analyst side of things. You can continue down the CompTIA pathway with either PenTest+ or CASP+ if you would like. Then I would consider certifications outside of the CompTIA realm, like the EC Council certs, or SANS certs. I would love to hear from you again and to check in on your progress and success!
