SSID Net+
-
Mike and Wes were kidding around about changing the SSID to something to put snoops off. (Very funny) It was also mentioned that for security, the SSID can be turned off. Ok. I'm pretty sure I can do that, but my Windows 7 OS appears to only allow me to connect to a wireless network it can see. So how would someone connect by just entering the SSID and password? My only guess would be to turn on the beacon long enough to see it, sign on, and then turn off the beacon. Has anyone else tried to do this on Windows 7 or 8?

Richard,
The setup for connecting to a hidden wireless network in Windows 7:
Start>Control Panel> "Network and Sharing Center" On left, select "Manage wireless Networks" Underneath "Manage wireless networks..." Click "Add" On the "Manually Connect to a wireless network" dialog box Click "Manually create a network profile" On the following screen type in "Network name" box the SSID (SSID=Network Name) Choose the matching security type, ecnryption type and security key **Check box next to "Connect even if the network is not broadcasting" ** follow instructions for next screens.
Cordially,

Thanks, Ronnie. I wasn't seeing the option to "manage wireless networks" on my desktop pc. Well, the wireless NIC is disabled since I determined to get a more secure connection using Ethernet. But I found your description to be 100% right on for my Windows 7 laptop. Again, thanks.
