Is a surge suppressor useful at all if your room's outlets are not grounded?

Hello,
I have bought a surge suppressor a few weeks ago because I was worried of electrical surges damaging my computer. What I did not anticipate was, when I set up the surge suppressor, a little red light turned on telling me that the line was not grounded. So what does that mean, that the surge suppressor will just work as a regular power strip without protecting me from things like thunder?

@thomas-pondant,
If the outlet is ungrounded then a surge suppressor doesn't have a ground to send the surge to away from your equipment. This will create a ground loop.Also, regardless of the surge suppressor it will only be able to handle so much based on clamping voltage. The better the suppressor is the lower the clamping voltage.
