Overlapping topics in different exams and passing tests
-
Noticing that certifications like Blue team, GCIH , CFR have lots of overlap, just as Security+ and Pentest+ overlap with CEH,
and Network+ / CCNA and CASP+ with CISSP- Do people specialize (like doing mostly Cisco or Microsoft certs with vendors for instance) so that its slightly easier and also one can ingrain these topics or do people spread out and have a broad range of different certs over a wide area of different topics? Im noticing that with certs people tend to either generalize or specialize- what are the pros and cons? and Do overlapping subjects help out a bit in regards to studying right? Thoughts -
@Erik-Corradino , I hope all is well. It really depends on what your career path is and what is driving your pursuit of certification(s) in the first place (job req's, RFP's, customer project, career advancement/change, etc...)
The smart approach is to have broad coverage in topics/certs/skill silos that are representative of you/your skills and abilities so that people can better understand you as you move through your career.
BUT, keep in mind that certifications cost $$$... so if someone is paying you to get certified, take advantage of that opportunity even if it is an overlapping cert, and/or seems to be identical but from a different vendor, as that is essentially free to you.
Good luck !!!

Thank you so much - trying to plan these out - seems like you cant be too much of a specialist since you need to see the forest for the trees and if you dont specialize you may be doing things out of your domain of expertise and even if you're smart - due to complexity it may beyond one's ability to solve.
