New layout video size
-
Hi,
First, I want to say that overall I like the new layout. I especially like being able to track what I have already watched.
I think the new URL naming scheme & course organisation are better, though I would like to be able to see the objective numbers next to each topic and video in the "Current Course" list.
One thing I don't like so much is the new smaller fixed size of the video on the page.
I have large monitors and so like to snap the browser window with the video in it to half the screen so I can use the rest of the screen space for other things. The old layout used to size the video to fit the width of the browser window, which was perfect.
Now I have just two options: tiny fixed size (in-between the new left and right columns), or full screen. (I can also use the browser page zoom function, but this changes the layout drastically due to the responsive site code, and in Chrome, this resizes every tab I have open to the new zoom level, so is not ideal.)
So, a way to resize the video or fit it to the browser window would be nice!
Cheers. -
Interesting. During the site upgrade we switched to a new video player that offered several improvements over the old one. One of those improvements is a fully responsive design that scales with your screen. On my system the video player grows and shrinks with the page. You mentioned you are running Chrome. Could I get you to share with me what OS you are running and which version of Chrome you are using? I will pass that on to the web team and have them do some testing to see if they can't get that straightened out.

Thanks Don for your reply.
The video does scale with the page, but to a limited extent.
With the browser window snapped to half screen, the video is flanked by the 'Current Course' menu on the left and the 'Studio Schedule' on the right, and takes up less than half the total width of the window. Even with the browser window maximised, the video gets no bigger than about 600px across. With 2560 x 1440 resolution, this is pretty tiny.
In ScaleEngine HD, the stream has black bars at top and bottom. On the Vimeo stream (which I prefer as I tend to get a more reliable stream), it has bars at left and right, so the picture itself is even smaller again!
The result is the same for me in both Chrome and IE. I am using Chrome 33 and IE 11 on Windows 8. Screen resolution is 2560 x 1440 with DPI at 125%.
I can post links to screen shots if that would help. -
My 2 cents:
There is too much going on AROUND the video.
Try a theme that places the video at the top and the all text & link under the video.
AND - Why take away the anility to view other than course objective? -
@darkmatta, I've passed your information over to our web guy and he will look in to it.
@ChadSeaton, On the old layout there were three different views (exam objective, recent videos, all videos). According to our web analytics the exam objective view was responsible for almost all of the episode navigation. When we went to an LMS style page, we had to pick so we went with the objective view.

What he said
The Library ->Course -> Objective -> Content -> Player
Just seems to deep.
Although, the 'tracking' feature is just awesome. -
Thanks Don, look forward to seeing what they come up with.
Agree with Chad that it seems to be an issue with too much going on around the video - the video itself is not being prioritised enough in the layout. -
@darkmatta I am testing a solution to the small video size in our staging environment. Check it out and give some feed back if you would like. I still have some styling to do on it but the basic functionality is there.

This feature is now live!

Excellent!
Works really well here on my system.
Thanks for getting on to this so quickly.
