Telnet Access Between Switch and Router
-
I'm watching the initial device configuration episode and I'm at 1:46:34. I have my console cable plugged into my switch. I have a straight through Ethernet cable running from the 2621 router (Fa0/0) to port 23 of the switch. With my serial connection to the switch, I can telnet into the router no problem. I've given my switch's vlan an ip address of 192.168.0.10 and the Fa0/0 on the router has an ip address of 192.168.0.1
I believe I configured the switch's vty lines correctly. See picture.
At this point in the episode, Don says I can remove my console cable and just use Ethernet to telnet into the switch. I removed the console cable from my computer. I have a straight through Ethernet cable going from my computer to a port on the switch. Using putty, I choose telnet, enter in the ip address of the switch's vlan 192.168.0.10, but I get an error message: Network error: connection timed out. What am I missing? -
Update: I figured it out. It's because windows was using dhcp to assign my computer an ip address. I statically assigned 192.168.0.2 and bam! It's all good.
