Red Hat Enterprise Linux 8 Workstation vs Server vs Developer
-
Hi,
I have been watch Don's videos about linux administration. Firstly, thank you so much for this Don. All the contents are very useful and well explained.
I am new to this whole Red Hat Linux and I want to install this in my XPS laptop as main/only OS. I want to get my hands dirty but I am so confused about which option is good for me. Can you please explain the difference a bit and give me your recommendation/suggestion?
Thank you,
Malik

As a learner, I would recommend you go with the developer edition. Here is the breakdown:
- Workstation - This version is designed for end users. It defaults to a GUI desktop with some standard applications included. It is missing some functionality from the server edition which means you will be reliant on third-party repositories to install "server" class packages. Third-party repositories are frowned upon in the Red Hat world as they compromise your ability to get support from the Red Hat team.
- Server - This version is designed for servers and defaults to a CLI environment with no GUI. All "server" class packages are available to be installed. Also, all "workstation" class packages are available. They just aren't installed by default.
- Developer - This is identical to server, except with heavily discounted pricing (free) and modified licensing.
I recommend the developer edition because you get 1 physical install (your laptop) and up to 50 virtual machines for free. You can choose to install the GUI and desktop apps resulting in a "workstation" like install but with all of the server features available to you.

@Don-Pezet I am conflicted about which option are you referring to?
What's the main difference between below link products or is it same?
https://developers.redhat.com/
https://www.redhat.com/en/store/red-hat-enterprise-linux-developer-suite
I have already signed up for the first link and got my subscription up and running.

The main difference is that the $99 license includes access to the Red Hat Developer Toolset. The free license comes with the standard developer tools included in every edition.

@Don-Pezet Can you also please explain while I am going to be installing this as main OS in my laptop, what option should I select? Server with GUI or Workstation? What are your recommendations?, RED HAT is bit overwhelming as I am getting into it. Too many options!
