VM HD space question
-
Hi Folks,
New to Hyper-V here. I have a question about virtual drive space. So I created a VM in Hypervisor manager and started to install Windows. The hard drive space screen that comes up during install showed that there was 127gb of free space but that actually isn't the case with the physical hard drive on the machine. Now if I'm not mistaken, I believe the default size of a VHD file using IDE connection is in fact 127gb. What I'm not understanding is why it cannot see what the true free space of the physical disk is to avoid space issue when installing VMs. Is there a way of setting it so it sees the true free space available? -
MY guess is that you are using a dynamic disk and not a static one (it is by default). The dynamic disk won't allocate all of the space at once and will use only what is written to the VHDX file. That is what I am thinking you aren't seeing a 127GB file on your physical disk.

So to confirm, when you create a VM it defaults as having a dynamic disk? I don't recall seeing this during the initial setup of a VM. I did see where you can convert a dynamic drive to fixed but when I tried that, it was advising there wasn't enough storage space. Not sure what size it is looking for when trying to convert.

You're probably correct about the dynamic now being the default. So the default size is allocating a max drive size of 127GB. Even though it may not report as 127GB it will use up to 127 GB. The issue though is that it does require there to be room to expand that drive to 127GB--free space. So without knowing your hardware specs, It may be it doesn't sense 127 GB of contiguous free space to make that conversion possible right now.
