Question about trunks
-
Sorry if this was asked before didn't see it though...
I think i know what a trunk is but maybe I have it wrong...
They let a VLAN communicate outside the switchhow do you know when to set up a switch port as an access port and when to set it up as a trunk port ... still a bit unsure
or do I have everything mixed up? I really just want to learn networking better mainly cisco so i can finally not be such a network idiot haha
thanks in advance ...itprotv rocks

They let a VLAN communicate outside the switchTrunks allow for multiple vlans to use that link between switches. Without trunks, each vlan would need a direct cable to the same vlan on another switch. Trunks allows all the vlans to use it cross over to another switch to access the same vlan..
how do you know when to set up a switch port as an access port and when to set it up as a trunk port ... still a bit unsure
An access port would usually only be setup if the connecting devices are endpoint devices like PCs, workstations, servers, IoT, etc.,
Trunks are links between switches so that multiple vlans can use that single trunk to cross to another switch instead of require each vlan on SW1 to connect to the same vlan on SW2.

Thanks Ronnie,
Follow-up question
Couldn’t you just use a router instead of a trunk ? Course it would mean more pricey and more space … but would it do basically the same thing or not really? -

Thanks, Ronnie ... sorry I'm being a pest here
dang think I hit a wall on my CCNA studies ... stuck on routing, haven't even got to dynamic routing yet can't seem to grasp static here I was so proud I got past subnetting
I thought I understood the theory but when I went to config one in PT I get inconsistent subnetting errors and it doesn't work.
Oh i see you are redoing CCNA btw... are there any major changes from the previous version?
I lose my change to study with Aubri :( hahah
hey off topic you going to channelcon in chicago this year, would love to see you in person again Ronnie :D want to know before i buy a ticket lol -
Think i got it now just took watching the videos a few times… :)

I've been on holiday for the last week. We're reshooting the CCNA to make it more up to date with our newer format and change of learning design model.
I'm not scheduled to travel anywhere for ACI learning, so I don't think I'll be there this year.
