Cisco's ASDM
-
Is ASDM like CCP in that it's free? I went to download the ASDM and it said I need a service contract to download it.
Someone told me that it comes on the ASA itself. is this true? is it like CCP express where you https into the router and you get the GUI over a browser?

The ASDM is not technically free, you do need to have a Cisco account which includes your purchase of the ASA. From cisco, the ASDM is loaded with the ASA, then when you setup your ASA, you access the internal web server that will allow you to download the ASA to run locally from your Admin workstation.
The CCP I don't remember if that one is free or not. But I do believe it's free. The difference here is that the CCP was for Cisco IOS based devices. Remember that the ASA is really based from the PIX firewall systems and though they're close to the Cisco IOS they are not exactly the same and will not be managed through the CCP but only through the ASDM. I'm sure someone will chime on this second point. I just don't remember right off the top of my head.

 I got my demo ASA up and running. I set up basic functionality and downloaded the ASDM from the ASA itself. Really cool stuff. And it gives you an option to run ASDM as a web app or download the installer.
Man the ASA CLI is sort of like learning to write with your other hand. I am so use to using "#show ip int bri" as step 1 in troubleshooting anything. On the ASA it's "#Show int ip bri"
It's just wackiness all around.

Remember that even though it look like the Cisco IOS it really isn't. That's why the commands are bit different.
