The short answer is that you must attend at least 1 VMware Authorized course to be eligible to be granted a certification.
There are A FEW caveats that go with that statement however..., as noted below:
First, you need to attend an authorized class IF you are brand new to VMware certification, and looking to certify for the first time.
Second, you need to attend an authorized class IF you have been certified in the past, BUT, you let your certification(s) lapse, and they are NO LONGER active and current.
Third, you DO NOT need to attend an authorized class IF you already hold ANY VMware certification AND it is active and in good standing AT or ABOVE the VCP level, in ANY of the current technology silos/verticals that certifications are offered in.
Fourth, you DO NOT need to attend an authorized class IF you already hold ANY VMware certification AND it is active and in good standing AT or ABOVE the VCP level, in ANY of the current technology silos/verticals that certifications are offered in AND you are going to recertify/renew.
