Sounds like a great idea. You have to make decisions for dividing up your LUN across your SAN. Do you need larger and fewer LUNs or smaller and more LUNs.

I've been a long time ESXi user, which is fine but with a SAN, to fully take advantage of the SAN you may also want to consider vSphere to manage ESXi to the fullest capabilities.

@Adam-Gordon I don't want to focus to much on trying to build out a lab and with new to me Azure/AWS. Though I do want to learn Azure and maybe AWS too. But any chance your lab partner can create vmware 7 lab like they have for vmware 6 and while they are at it include Veeam? Thanks

In terms of a hypervisor/virtualization solution, there are many that you can use, again it is dependent on your preferences, as I discuss in the course, and your technology platform that you are using as a host, Windows / Linux / MAC OS...

@Sven-biedermann , I hope all is well. This can happen for several different reasons. Let's start with a basic issue...

If you are installing the ESXi Server 7.0 in VMware workstation, you might encounter an error stating ‘No network adapters”. To resolve this, go to vmx file where the virtual machine is installed and make following changes.

ethernet0.virtualDev = "e1000"

TO

ethernet0.virtualDev = "vmxnet3"

IF you are installing directly onto the Optiplex hardware to use it as a physical host for VM's, then it is likely that the network adapter(s) in the system do not have drivers that are able to load and initialize as part of the ESXi 7.0 load. You will have to check with Dell and the VMware websites and see if the hardware is compatible, and if there are drivers for that model of Optiplex that will work with ESXi 7. If so, they would have to be bundled and made available as part of the loading of the ESXi O/S which is a much more involved process, as you will need to create a custom image and include the drivers in it for them to work.

This is more probably dealing with the security policy where you are than it is something that will substantively improve or degrade your performance. If you choose to join the vCenter server to the domain. That will work, remember that your computer will be a member that computer if domain policies can apply to it, it will. Also for SSO, this allows domain users that have the proper permissions to access the server too. In a new installation, only the vCenter Single Sign-On administrator (administrator@vsphere.local by default) can authenticate to vCenter Single Sign-On.

You can use vCenter 7.0 to manage vSphere a mixture of vSphere 6.5 and vSphere 7.0 hosts, in a cluster or singularly.
