Setting u the Mac to work in a Windows Environment can mean many things, and as a result may involve a variety of tools and / or additional software. It would be helpful if you could provide a little bit of additional information as to what specifically you would be looking to do, such as extending Active Directory support to the Mac, in which case a toolset such as Jumpcloud would be good to examine:

When it comes to production networks, usually the go distro would be RedHat Linux Enterprise. This has the added benefit of support but does cost more than the other editions and administration does require some knowledge.

If you're willing to work without support but more end user friendly, I would say that Ubuntu Server 16. x LTS is probably more user friendly but still requires some command line configuration, just as all Linux distros do.

I'll ask Don to weigh in on this too. He may have a better suggestion.

I hope some of the ITProTV members will also weigh in here to help!

Update: I was able to talk to Don about this today. We're in agreement with two exceptions which I did not know. One, that Ubuntu Server has server support from Canonical. Two, there is SUSE Linux which is also a supported distro not as big here as over in Europe but it is available.

If you want to stick with the RedHat Enterprise but don't need the support you can also run CentOS--which is a really a clone of RedHat.

Don Pezet and Mike Rodrick began with the Mac Integration this week but, I'm not sure when that's due to be complete before starting the ASCP or Technical Coordinator.

I know Don will be out of the office after today's show for the remainder of the week. So the Apple Sierra shows are beginning.

Remember that Don set up a Mac OSX Server first and connected his desktop to it. When doing, it gave some additional options to the client under updates.
These updates are located under the appstore in system preferences but you can
navigate to the /Library/Preferences/com.apple.SoftwareUpdate and delete the file. Even so, he mentions a better way to do this later in the episode

I just conferred with Don on this and we believe one of two or the combination of two thing may have been the key:

This may have been available in an earlier edition of El Capitan. This installation may have been on a mac mini with a conventional HDD rather than an SSD.

He knows it possible because it's in the show but that's the only logic that make sense since all articles are pointing to the fact that the feature is removed in El Cap.

The work around is from the Terminal:
srm -v then drag the file into the terminal window for it's path to show up and press return.
srm-rv if you choose delete folders.

Sorry this slipped by me.

The fast and quick answer is that you can't do a conversion in the way you want.

You can though create an identical account and copy the home folder over to the network.

Our network is configured by using multipel vlans. the wireless network is comprised of three different vlans (which is dhcp). and the mac mini is on a different vlan setup as a static IP. The setup is similar to the ones listed in the about cahcing service in the server help document.

Verify or configure :
If your MAC Mini (Caching Server is on a different subnet (VLAN) than your devices (iPad) trying to get updates for your applications, you may need additional configuration:

In the Server app Caching pane, click Edit next to Permissions.

Click the “Cache content for clients connecting from” pop-up menu, then choose "only some networks.”

Add local subnets by clicking the add button, then choose an IP address group name. (Add the Subnets of each VLAN you want to be able to connect)

If the IP address group you want isn’t listed as a choice, you can create it here. **(Must know your IP Networks)

To create a different IP address range, click the add button, then choose “Create a new network.” **(If the VLAN is not here...create it.)
**

Enter the IP address group name, a starting IP address, and an ending IP address. ** (Remember to enter the address range here.)
**

You can put an address range in CIDR notation (for example, 10.0.0.1/16) in the Start IP Address field, then the ending address will automatically be entered.

After you add the desired IP address group, click Create.

When you finish the configuration, click OK.
